The castle opened to the public in 1838, allowing visitors to explore the royal family's history from the time of Christian IV to the present day. Upon opening, a room was established showcasing possessions of Frederik VI, although the king passed away the following year. The chronological walkthrough and furnished interiors that still characterize Rosenborg Castle today were introduced for the first time in the European museum world.
The collection continued to grow, and in the 1960s, there was an initiative to establish a section at Amalienborg for the more recent part of the royal family. This was realized in 1977, with further expansion in 1994 into Christian VIII's Palace. The division between the two sections is marked by the year 1863, where Rosenborg Castle exhibits the Oldenburg kings and Amalienborg displays the Glücksburg dynasty.
In April 2012, an extensive restoration of the Marble Chamber in the castle was completed. The chamber is unique as there are no other rooms with such well-preserved special art marble anywhere else.
